Rabbit, Rabbit, Buzz, Buzz

This is a spirit art drawing I did in class this weekend. The one on the left is the warm-up, and the assignment was to draw a face with our non-dominant hand.

Drawing #1 went ok, left side, it was a warm-up so maybe took 5 minutes drawing.

Drawing #2, same assignment.....I heard draw a bed. My first reaction was, are you kidding me, I’m supposed to draw a face! Draw a bed, ok, into bed drawing I go. Eventually lands upon this girl's entire room. It was her world.

Welp, turns out I knew who in the room this drawing belonged to, so I showed her and asked do you recognize this?

AND HER MOUTH DROPPED TO THE FLOOR.

This is her daughter, who had a brave and valiant battle with cancer.

Drawing #1 is her as a child, before her illness. She had a photo in her phone that was this drawing.

I spoke to her mother about Drawing #2 and what I was hearing when I drew, the daughter's first comment to me was, we knew I was dying but I could feel so much love. You will notice hearts throughout the drawing, especially the bubble of love she had around her.

She spoke of the cat who healed her on the bed, and the one she now holds in spirit. Who, turns out, went to Spirit 3 weeks before her, and was part of her welcoming committee. And by the end of the drawing, a strange thing was happening to that cat, it was turning into a bunny rabbit. I had no idea why, again, I just go with it. Turns out it was her nickname. Mom currently has tons of rabbit/bunny jewelry because of this.

The daughter, Rabbit from now on, told me about her hamburger helper hands and had me draw the gloves. Mom explained that she was a fantastic artist and lost the ability to use her hands and create during the last three months she was in hospice care. She was paralyzed in the bed, which is why the bed was so important, it was her bubble of love. Rabbit had me draw her reaching for Mom and had me draw Mom, this is how I knew who to go to, I could see her.

Rabbit also told me about her favorite lamp and showed me how the light would dance around her room. Mom said it was the same one that was in her room and was kinda shocked at such a small, yet important detail to her.

We then had to move on to Drawing #3 in class, still drawing for the Mom. Rabbit had me draw a chubby-cheeked beer slinger at Fenway, I heard FF, so I put initials in the corner but looked like JF. Mom explained that they got tons of support from the Jimmy Fund and Stop and Shop during her cancer journey. Mom even saw the words Stop and Shop in the drawing and when she pointed it out, I could see them too. We took it as Rabbit's way of recognizing them and thanking them. There was true gratefulness throughout this whole reading. Mom proceeded to show me photos, that looked just like what Rabbit had me draw. I am also grateful to Rabbit for helping me, and for being able to show Mom her gratitude and ever-present love.

This led Mom and I to talk about one of my clients, finally getting to the entire point of this post, sorry, it has been a long one. In my day job as a graphic/web designer, I get the privilege to work for One Mission, doing whatever it takes for kids and families fighting cancer. They run all sorts of smile-causing programs, free parking, food vouchers and catered meal nights, birthday parties, deck my room, their funding runs the resource room, and 2 life specialists at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Their annual event, the Buzz for Kids Cancer is this weekend, there is still time to join in the buzz - https://buzzforkids.org/

These kids and families need support so they can fight the toughest battle life can throw at any of us. Rabbit is still grateful for all of the love and support her family received throughout her journey. and she is still advocating for these kids and helping them to this very day. Mom and family are super proud.
